The Role of the Order

Unlike the Imperial Mages Guild which falls under the direct command and control of the Emperor of the Confederation, the Order of the Sword is an organized and independent law enforcement guild, originally created and headed by the Church of Anthor. Since the day of Emperor Sonet, the Order has taken on a whole new role, moving from simple warfare to law enforcement, warfare training, command training, magisterial law training and legal mitigation, and diplomacy .

Law Enforcement
Seen as the Order's primary goal and purpose under the tenets of the founding members, law enforcement is the necessary duty of all members of the Order in the pursuit of maintaining a safe and ordered society. Since the founding days by the church of Anthor, other deities have come to be represented and associated with the Order, nearly all of them closely tied with the idea of law and protection.

Warfare
All members of the Order are required to have some level of training in military conventions, whether this is in the form of weapons training, combat healing, or field command training. The symbol and standard weapon of the Order is the longsword, and as such, nearly all entrants to the Order are required to learn how to use the longsword. While there are exceptions to this rule, it is not common.

Command Training
In some circles known as "officer training," the Order's system of command training deals with not only those that would be officers but also those that command smaller forces as non-commissioned officers (ie. sergeants and corporals). This command training is conducted at several different locations throughout the lands of Thardferr, their locations being hidden as a means of protecting upcoming officer corps from being destroyed in one move, as well as acting as last resort defensive positions.

Magisterial law training
Acting as lawyers and judges in the realms, Order personnel are often called upon to assist in legal matters. Whether these legal affairs are simple disputes over livestock or high-tension political fighting through the legal system, the Order handles situations with due process, often relegating a particular level of representation pertaining to the situation. The Magisterial Legal Corps are comprised of (from bottom to top in rank):
  • Constables (all Order soldiers and officers unless denoted otherwise)
  • Adjudicators
  • Order Magistrate
  • High Magistrate (High Court)
Diplomacy
A fledgling capacity of the Order created in 728 by then Order Magistrate Orchid Berrow, the Diplomatic Corps was created to train professional diplomats for more thorough and higher quality of dispute resolution, messenger security between realms, and consistent verbage of treaties and legal documentation. Diplomatic courses are taught at the Order garrison in CoopersvilleForge, Tuth, as well as through an association with the Scions of Edilar.
