Loralis is the keeper of the mysteries of the cosmos and protector of the Underdeep. Loralis is the queen of the deep, residing under the surface of Kyranath. She is the mistress of the creatures of the under realm and watches over and protects its ecology. But this is only part of her influence as all things lost are known to her, all things hidden shine as beacons in the night to her discerning eyes. She is the darkness that obscures and the keeper of the secrets and dreams that are held in the depths of each being's mind. But Loralis reveals what she knows when she is ready and may not encourage exploration or investigation. The reasons behind her actions, the Mysteries are unattainable by most and rarely explained even if discovered. Even in their discovery there is that which is still hidden and so nothing can truly ever by completely known, only depths to the shadow reveled. It is Loralis that knows where the answers are kept, how to find them, when they are able to be discovered and what hey will be. Only through the indulgence of Loralis can the lost, the mysterious and the things hidden in the depths, be it of Kyranath or of the mind, be discovered.

Dogma and Beliefs:

Secrets are different from deceit. Deceit tries to trick, confuse or some how take advantage of another through false information or actions, Secrets are only the keeping of information. The secret and the unknown is not deception it is either purposefully withheld, hidden or just not yet discovered. The reasons for this are mysteries known only to the Lady of Mystery, Loralis. Barely noticed in the depths of some peoples minds or in their dreams while they sleep, or caught by the corner of the eye when least expected, a fleeting glance that may or may not be true the discovery of one of the mysteries that hold the patterns of life and death together can be had.  Loralis is the goddess of the unknown, the seer and holder of secrets and keeper of the lost.
Loralis walks between life and death, ruling over dreams and darkness. Her realm is where the soul goes when it sleeps and is lost to the waking world and where some may return to stay when they have finally died. The mysteries of life and where you will go after death are hers to keep or reveal as she sees fit.
The followers of Loralis believe in the protection of secrets and the keeping of things hidden until their proper time. They are usually trustworthy but will divulge anything they know if Loralis tells them it is time for it to be reveled. This is the only way most will ever let out a confidence. This carries over into their keeping the places of worship unknown to others. Temples and shrines are always hidden, they are also always underground. Only by their own seeking or by the leading of them there by one of the clergy is anyone to be knowledgeable of these sites that are directly linked to the surface world.
Darkness is the realm of Loralis. The places between the surface world and the fiery depths, the moments between life and death, shadows and hollows, caverns and caves and where things are lost and forgotten fall under her influence and are within her sight. Night blankets the world with darkness and provides time for sleep and for secrets to be played out. During the nighttime most people sleep and they are in a state that though alive is closer to death than any other time in life. The soul then leaves their body and enters her realm, the realm of dreams, nightmares, the unknown and might have been. Within each persons sleep, Loralis visits them, their soul leaves their body and puts the  waking world behind. This is where the obfuscation of life are revealed and the sleeper is able to have glimpses of the true essence of creation. Through their interaction with the phantasms and yet to be realized thoughts and dreams, they are giving worship to Loralis and she is able to know their every secret, even those of which they themselves may not be aware or have yet to be discovered.

Sayings of the Mystics

Physical Manifestations:

Loralis has always appeared as a dark skinned female with white hair and long, well kept fingernails. She wears a dark gray, hooded robe that seems to flow around her like shadows flickering in candle light. About her waist is a chain from which hangs many keys. Typically she will also have a large tome clutched under her left arm and a black staff in her right.

Alters and Idols:

The temples of Loralis have an idol of the goddess usually carved from a dark stone. She is enshrouded by loosely draped robes, a chain with many keys hangs around her waist. The idol holds an open book with her head bowed as if reading.

Major Centers of Worship:

Only in the Underdark and Deep Realms of Kyranath are the temples and shrines of Loralis openly built. Loralis is the protector of the Underdeep and most all the under dwelling races have shrines to her in their villages and temples in any city. It is through her seals that travel between the surface and the Underdeep can be linked and only through her indulgence that any may travel through these portals. Little of her and her ways as the Goddess Queen of the Underdeep is known to those that live on the surface. It as her other aspects that she is worshipped by most.
On the surface of Kyranath, locations of the temples and shrines of Loralis are always hidden and always underground. Natural caves and caverns are more appreciated but artificial tunnels can also be sued or added to these as needed. The most splendid of the Underdeep temples are natural marvels.. Revealing the location of the surface linked holy places by a follower of Loralis that have discovered them is considered an unforgivable betrayal to the goddess. Only by the permission of Loralis is their location to be given to another. It is expected of any who worship Loralis and need the services of her worldly church to seek them out themselves, finding them through their own ability to discover and not just be told or lead to them by another. Through the clergy of Loralis, she allows the leading of those that are in need of her. They have her permission to bring others to the holy places and Repositories of  Mysteries. But the clergy must have discovered these places themselves without any aid of others or letting any know what they seek.
The Church of Loralis is much more vast than most would know and in the knowing for some to even believe. This is because many of the worshippers of Loralis may never realize that they are her worshippers. Anyone that holds a dream, seeks something seemingly intangible or is driven by some nearly unattainable goal gives some bit of worship to the Lady of Mystery.  All these give power to Loralis so that she needs very little in the way of material trappings to lure worshippers to her. Thus her temples and shrines nearly always in obscure and hidden places, disguised and always underground.

Worshipers:

Explorers and dreamers, those reaching for seeming unattainable goals and the researcher of hidden facts make up the bulk of the worshippers of Loralis. They come in all shapes and sizes, races and genders and cross all cultural and social barriers. If there is one defining thing about them it is that they all seem to be introspective or looking beyond the world around them for answers. This is the case even if many are found living in cramped and confined homes or workplaces as many are. This is because Loralis has a great many worshippers that find vocation in places that get very little light, or spend long time in doors or underground. Miners or all kinds, librarians, researchers and scholars fall into this description as do diligent craftsmen and artisans of many kinds. But this is not the only worshipper. The farm hand that dreams of being a knight, the maiden that searches for her soul mate, an artist seeking the capture the soul within his painting or a soldier who wishes to gain the knowledge of past battles all are followers of the Goddess of Mystery. Anyone who seeks the answers to those things seemingly unknowable or looks for that which is lost are a worshipper of Loralis or they have no chance of success.
Worshippers and Clergy alike wear a black key on a chain or cord around their neck.

The Clergy:

The exact extent of the church of Loralis is unknown. There is no known number of temples, shrines or even people associated with it that can be counted. None are openly servants of Loralis, at least not to be found by going to anyone obvious place. The clergy of Loralis are everywhere and nowhere. They can usually be found if one seeks them but it generally turns out they find you or you just stumble on to them at your time of need. No one on the street can point yo u to one of their temples, nor can a shrine be spied along side a road or in a city unless it is by accident or purposefully sought. So are the clergy.

Church Hierarchy:

"Al that is lost is not gone but sometimes 'tis not meant to be found. There is always at least one who knows where it be." – Nebidian, Arch-Mystic of the Gallows Temple (born 441 to ?)

The Uninitiated - These are those that have dedicated themselves to the Lady of Mystery but as of yet have not found a place of secret instruction and so wander the world seeking one of her hidden temples and searching their own thoughts and Kyranath for the answers to the unanswerable questions. Each of these has already gained the favor of Loralis to a degree to be able to use divine magics, but generally have only the power to give her blessing or heal light wounds. But it is not unheard of for Loralis to keep one of these away from any of her places of instruction and so have to find their own answers. Rare members of the clergy reach levels of favor as high as any in the church and it is these that finally create their own hidden shrine, a Repository of Mysteries, where they research and record their secrets and wait for others to find them in order to pass on their life's work and knowledge of the unknown. Some of these die never being found by another of the church, their notes and secrets lost, perhaps stolen or destroyed, but many waiting for the right person to come along and have them revealed.

Mystics- The Mystics are a select few of the uninitiated that after finding one of the hidden temples refuses instruction after the basic of instruction and again leaves to wander the world and attempt to find the answers to the unanswerable questions on their own. They typically seek out a specific answer or may go after the lost secrets of another attempting to find their hidden Repository of Mysteries if one exists.

Student of the Mysteries - Those clergy that remain at a shrine or a temple and study the collected secrets become Students of the Mysteries. These clergy take care of the general needs of the place, from clerical to military. They are scholars, researchers, librarians, scribes, illumanists, teachers, craftsmen, farmers and husbandry men or any other profession needed to maintain the repository, shrine or temple.

Keeper of the Mysteries - In some cases the Repository of Mysteries of an uninitiated or one founded or discovered by an Mystic gains some need to be revealed. More find or are lead to it, it grows into a shrine and then a temple to Loralis. Those Students of the Mystery that find a Repository of Mystery and are allowed to stay on and study there, gain insights and secrets as of yet unknown. After time, research, investigation and experience they gain divine favor enabling them to seek revelations form Loralis herself (cast 4th-level spells). If the repository has grown into a shrine, they take on the mantle of its caretaker and leader under the Arch-Mystic that founded it and become the Keeper of the Mysteries.

Arch-Mystics - The Mystics that have found some mystery until now undiscovered will build their own sanctuary, a Repository of Mystery, the place where they research, record and guard their secrets and then become the leader of those that later find it. Some gain this status by discovering or gaining the care of a lost repository of an Uninitiated.

Speaker of the Mysteries- When a Repository of Mystery has become a temple under a Mystic Sage, it needs his best follower and student to become its leader. Usually this is the Keeper of Mysteries that had first ran it while it was but a shrine. But whoever it is they have achieved the secrets that are hidden between life and death and attained such insight as to be able to find their way along any path, or obscure it even form others (cast 6th-level spells). These become the caretakers for the temples of Loralis.

Mystic Sage - The Arch-Mystic that has unearthed multiple mysteries and founded two or more repositories for these discoveries become the leader over their diverse areas of discovery and the temples, shrines and repositories he has founded. There is usually only one of these per temple and it is rare for them to not renounce their leadership in order to pursue further discovery after founding one temple.

Ceremonies and Holy Days:

Giving of Secrets
Members of the church, followers and any wishing favor of Loralis can perform a special ceremony where they reveal a secret that only they know to the alter of any of Loralis' hidden shrines. The one giving their secret must first find the hidden shrine and then after completely stripping themselves of all coverings and goods, reveals their secret to the cleric in care of the shrine. If the secret is truly unknown to any but the one giving it up, then it is removed from the speaker and hidden from the world for only Loralis to ever know or reveal. The onus of the knowledge is lifted from the soul of the one giving it up and they can then live without the guilt or burden connected to it. No actual forgiveness is granted if the secret would need it, only the one giving up the secret is relieved of any troubling thoughts or later punishment in the afterlife for the knowledge of it by the enacting of the ceremony. Secrets told to the clergy of Loralis are never revealed and any of the clergy that does so without the permission of Loralis will forever lose favor with her and no longer be able to cast divine magics as well as receive punishment in the afterlife.

Priestly Vestments:

In most of their travels a priest of Loralis is indistinguishable from most other common people. They wear no obvious regalia or uniform. One tell-tale may be the armor they wear as they can use no worked metals or refined ores in its making. But this can only be a hint if they are wearing some form of armor utilizing something other than metal in the place of where metal is usually used.
In temple dress they wear long, near black robes with deep hoods. These are never worn tightly and the features are completely hidden. Only height may give indication of race, and voice of gender.

Affiliated Orders, Societies and Guilds:

Keepers of Obscure Knowledge Society - Located in the back meeting hall of a well to do Inn found in Windtown named the Canal View and with smaller offices in most large cities (usually a room in the house of one of their members or that member parent's basement), this group of amateur explorers, investigators and scholars search Kyranath for lost and obscure subjects and record what they can about them. Much of what they have collected is considered worthless or dubious in usefulness at best and many think it is nothing more than a collection of hard to believe theories and improbable circumstances and creatures that they have reported discovering. But in their research bits of the truth may sometimes be glimpsed behind the veil of reality. Loralis has a place in her heart for such crackpots and kooks and sometimes reveals to them secrets and hidden things most would miss or think of no import.

Miner's Guilds - Many organized guilds of miners and tunnel diggers are associated with the church of Loralis. It is Loralis that knows the whereabouts of every gemstone and vein of ore and these are only revealed through her permission without threat of mishap of danger in gaining these resources. Those that make a living on the finding and retrieving of such treasures of the underworld tend to give Loralis her due.

Church Errata:

Allies

Aqualie - Aqualie is the ever present sea and still waters of the world, both tumultuous and soothing, drowner of men, mysterious, deep and dark, yet necessary for life. Loralis and Aqualie see in each other kindred spirits. Both necessary for life and yet easily can turn on you and bring loss or death, both part of the most living's everyday or night's existence and yet to vast and deep to ever be completely known. Their connection is almost null and yet they think of themselves as friends, the two most complex of the gods and so have gained each other's ear.

Diadria - Diadria is the older sister of Loralis. She gives to each a span of life and then sends them on their way after it ends to their final destinations. Along this way it is Loralis the allows the soul to seek beyond their physical bodies while still alive and so aid in their finding their way after death. Diadria and Loralis both serve as links between life and the greater Cosmos where all souls first come from and finally return.

Ostran - Ostran is the wise older brother to Loralis. He balances the world so that there is a need for her physically to provide darkness to the Creator's light, and mentally to give dreams to the tired waking mind. Ostran also preserves the barriers between life and death where Loralis resides giving her a place in which to seek out the mysteries and known the lost.

Terrarie ***- The god of the earth encircles and creates that which forms the inner darkness. It is only through the creation of the world and its form that the Underdeep and secret places are made. Loralis buries her secrets in the form of Terrarie and has the Earth god to protect and defend her in the physical world. In the Underdeep Terrarie is the king and Loralis his Queen.

Foes

Aerie - The free spirit and traveler is never one to keep themselves hidden or unlikely to share what they know. Aerie is spontaneous and care free and so does not like things to be unknown or unable to be used. The elemental god of air does not like the enclosed and blocked spaces of eh world or not being able to see and use whatever there is that may be needed at any given time. Aerie is forever uncovering the buried lifting the cover form things, blowing away the sands that obscure or the clouds that make the day dark. Loralis can barely abide this uncaring state with no care for propriety and mystery.

Fyrre - Rather than see hidden and unknown Fyrre would rather see things changed and consumed. Given his manner of dealing with things, al secrets would be burned away and purged, consumed and forgotten, or just changed and so unrecognizable. Fyrre would take the ores hidden away in the world and transform them into metals to be smelted and forged melted down and reforged, but never left or lost. And Fyrre in his hatred of the darkness and holding of secrets creates light to drive away the shadows and expose the hidden things of the world.

Kaldinsky - Though not truly hostile, Loralis and Kaldinsky differ in their ideas as to how to maintain information. Both would see nothing ever be completely forgotten, but Kaldinsky would allow anyone who wants the information to have it while Loralis wants to preserve, hidden away until the time is right for the correct person to discover the information.

Kreaon ***- Light is the bane to all darkness. The Creator destroys the darkness and shadows, exposes the hidden things and gives insights into the creation of things to any that would seek it. Loralis wars against his natural order wanting the world to be hidden in mystery and perpetual phantasms and illusion. Though she is not an arbitor of destruction but rather a creator herself of dreams, the perfect order of the Creator keeps thinking beings locked in their physical world and not in her world of dreams more often than not.

The Mystic becomes more closely attuned to Loralis and gain specially granted powers as favor for their choice to tread the path less traveled, seeking to find what others have yet to find, or discover by a different means the knowledge others have already gathered and so add to the store of secrets to be kept till such time as they should be revealed. The Mystic is free to travel to any shrine or temple in their exploration and investigation of the Mysteries of Creation, but they are not to ever stay for anything more than the basest of instruction. Instigating their own research within the libraries of such places is allowable as long as they gain no knowledge through the interpretation of others.
The Mystic uses the normal level progression for the Cleric until reaching  11th level, and then become an Arch-Mystic and proceeding to higher levels, each level costing 225,000 experience per level to maximum level of 20, if allowed to race.
After reaching 7th level and gaining the ability to Dream Walk the Mystic may build a sanctuary, a shrine to Loralis that acts as his repository of secrets and learning. They must find a location through successfully Dream Walking to an as of yet unseen, undiscovered and never visited sight in Kyranath. For purposes of this search, the chance to fall short or long of the destination is reduced by 4% per level. Thus a Mystic can automatically find such a place upon reaching 11th level. This will be their place of retiring at such time they feel they can no longer learn any more of the mysteries or has discovered such things as to need to record and guard them in preparation of others coming to learn of them or their eventual need to be known.  The shrine can be any place underground in any place no one has ever trod before. This can be in a distant mountain range, deep in the Underdeep, beneath a stand of trees in the wilderness, or even under a large populated city, as long as the site has as of yet never been discovered by anyone before the Mystic finds it.  After such time as the repository has been built the Mystic will gain 2-5 uninitiated priests of level 1-3 as followers wishing to aid you in your duty to the mysteries and one Spelunker (ranger) of level 3-5.  These will act as scribes and librarians, investigators for your needs, or  just guards and deal with those that come to the repository with no understanding of what it is or have no need to meet with you. The Mystic may turn these away as they find the place if he so wishes with them never learning that they had found a Repository of the Mysteries.

Arch-Mystic

Upon gaining the experience to move on to llth-level, the Mystic cannot proceed unless he has discovered some as of yet unknown thing other than his own repository location and create a repository for the information. Be it knowledge yet distributed to the greater part of the world, a great secret or  item of power lost, a new perspective or theory that is then taken and used or anything else deemed worthy of Loralis to keep till it is needed. This is possible only if the Mystic has gone on a quest for the answers to a mystery and succeeded, if the character discovers a hidden repository and figures out its secrets or  is judged more capable than the present Arch-Mystic already there and so care for its secrets, thereby assuming their position. The later is only possible if the Arch-Mystic found there is not the one that built the repository. If the Mystic is found to be less capable than the Arch-Mystic he attempted to replace, his experience points are reduced to exactly 450,000 remaining (just enough to be 10th-level). The one he replaces will suffer similar loss of experience when they are replaced and must seek new experience through adventure once more and make their own quest for new mysteries and their answers.
The precise details of each judgment as to who is more worthy are not known. It may be a simple question or even a trial by combat. The judgment will always be something to test the supplicant's faith and ability to comprehend the secrets of the repository and the mysteries it holds. Since the Arch-Mystic already there has had some time to study it and perhaps gain some understanding, this gives them an advantage. Each level the Arch-Mystic is higher than the Mystic attempting to gain the repository, gives them a 5% chance to win any contest without the supplicant having any chance what so ever.
When a character becomes a 13th-level Arch-Mystic and above, he gains five more underlings per level. The Repository of Mystery he maintains will become more well known after this as these followers go out on missions and investigations for the Arch-Mystic and Loralis allows then to bring others back with them. It will remain hidden but not secret. The new followers will be three uninitiated of level 0-3, a Student of the Mysteries of level 2-5 and a Mystic of level 4 -7.  The repository will slowly grow to become a Shrine to Loralis, needing to build on additional areas for the care and needs of the followers, visitors and worshippers. The Arch-Mystic may turn these new followers away as they find the repository, if he so wishes. They will go on their way never learning that they had found a Repository of the Mysteries.

Mystic Sage

The highest ranking Mystics are the Mystic Sages (14th level +). To become a Mystic Sage, an Arch-Mystic must become the keeper of two or more Repositories of Mystery, thus having to succeeded in the prerequisites to become an Arch-Mystic two or more times. This is not possible if they have allowed their first repository to remain in secret. The original repository must have grown to the size of a shrine to Loralis and as the newer repositories are being discovered, built or researched, the first will become a temple. The temple is then ran by the clergy that had come as followers to the first repository, that have by now gained enough experience to be able to take such positions. As a temple a great amount of area must be built to house the number of peoples needed to maintain and guard it, provide for the followers, visitors and needs of worshippers. Also the temple will cause 10-60, 0-level followers to come to serve the Mystic Sage. These will help to maintain the temple and make it as self sufficient as possible and allow it to remain hidden if not secret. Each Repository of Mystery after the first will gain followers as stated above but only for each two levels above 13th the Mystic Sage has achieved. Thus at reaching 15th-level, the second Repository of Mystery will start to grow into a shrine, etc...
The Mystic Sage gains greater understanding of the mysteries of the cosmos through their diversity of discovery and their great ability to compartmentalize information; and with this understanding, greater ability to cast spells. For each level above 13th, the Mystic Sage gains one additional spell level per Repository of Mystery they have established (not including the first which has grown into a Temple.), These levels can be used as either a single spell or as several spells whose levels total to the number they have gained (for example, at 15th-level  Mystic Sage may gain one 6th-level spell, six 1st-level spells, one 1st-level spell, one 2nd-level spell and one 3rd-level spell, etc.).
The position of Mystic Sage is not capable of being replaced by the supplication of another, as only the most faithful and capable will ever be able to gain this level of understanding. Instead, the Mystic Sage's successor is the acting Arch-Mystic that has been given the keeping of the temple. The position of Mystic Sage is demanding, thankless, and generally unexciting for anyone except a scholar, librarian or hermit. After a few hundred thousand experience points of such stuff, any adventurer worthy of the name probably is ready to move on to something else.
For this reason, if the Mystic Sage reaches 15th level he can step down from his position at any time thereafter, provided he has a suitable successor. Upon stepping down, the former Mystic Sage must relinquish any bonus spell levels and any experience points gained after attaining 14th level.  He is now a 14th level Mystic, and begins advancing anew. The character may rise in level as usual from this point onward.

Appendix 3: Outer Realm of Loralis

Noxlethstyrium

Loralis resides in the realm of darkness, the space between life and death, the land of dreams, a place of illusions and shadows, hidden away within the center of the cosmos where none but she and those she allows may ever tread. Even the far traveling Celenia and free roving Aerie know only the outer edges of this Realm. Noxlethstyrium is the pathways between thought, phantasm that resides in the depths of every living mind. Once one is freed of the physical body the soul does not forget the places it has visited in dreams and those that have discovered the greater mysteries of those depths and followed the ways of Loralis may forever dwell in these places  in the afterlife. After passing through Nathalfertium, the Realm of the Dead, and the judgment of Diadria, those souls that Loralis has previously bargained for with the Lady of the Cold Embrace can travel down her road and find the Paths of Dream. By taking these paths, their soul is forever freed of the turmoil of being dead and returns to those dreams it had once wished for in life. The phantasmal palaces are vast and well appointed, filled with all the things that most please the faithful of Loralis. This is what awaits for those that find their way to Noxlethstyrium where their every wish and fondest dream is realized and shared.

Appendix 4: Book of Loralis

Librum Mystere (The Book of Mysteries)

This legendary volume is not completely known and cannot be fully understood by any one person. Each that has been said to have read it takes from it something different than any other. The actual tome itself is said to be always carried by Loralis, not even entrusted to any secret place but remains ever in her sight. It is said to appear only at times when Loralis has found one of her faithful who has become so attuned to the mysteries that they may attain some greater learning through its reading. No one has ever copied the Librum Mystere but many compendiums and paraphrased writings about what has been read by those that have had the privilege have come down through the ages. These have found there way into book collections all across Kyranath and many temples of Loralis have libraries and copies of these writings for their most trusted clergy to read and try to comprehend and perhaps gain some insight to share with the rest of the church. Some of these mysteries were originally scrawled on scrolls, others carved into stone in the repositories of the Msytics. It is impossible to collect all such writings. But this is not the goal of any within the church. It is only that they know where these can be found that is needed. All know that no one person could ever comprehend it anyway and if they could they would have the power of a god, the power of Loralis.
