Ostran (Keeper of the Scales)
True Neutral Most High Power
|
![]() |
Balance, no other word can describe Ostran so well as this single world. If there were a perfect mix of chaos and law, good and evil, black and white then Ostran would be its embodiment. While all the other gods may take delight in the petty intrigues and squabbles with each other or the other pantheons, Ostran finds these interactions dull and lifeless. If it were up to him he would be quite content to spend eternity in a secluded grove of trees pondering the intricacies of life as a whole. Ostran cares not for power, all he does is watch and protect his domain, the untouchable balance that maintains Kyranath.

Dogma and Beliefs:
The worship of Ostran was rekindled thanks to the intervention of the fey people. In an effort to guard the ancient forests of the elves the fey put in motion the plan to bring Ostran's worship to the humans. The fey searched throughout the world for humans that could they made to understand that the loss of these ancient magical forests would lead to not only the death of the elves but of humanity as well. They succeeded in persuading some to focus on what they were doing and where it would lead. Some humans they contacted realized that they were on the road to extinction because of the wars they were fighting and the destructoin it wought wrought but they had no means to stop it. The fey used their hidden ways of moving about creation to make contact everywhere men could be found that had the sense to see this and organized them under the worship of the Keeper of the Scales. The end result was the formaton of the first druidic orders under Ostran's stewardship and later a renewal of his church now known as the Contemplators of Balance.
The followers of Ostran believe in
a balance between all things above all else. They seek to maintain the
balance of existence within the world and teach others to understand and
respect it. They understands that there is a natural cycle, and that this
cycle is where the balance lies. The influence of order and chaos will
rise and fall with neither truly becoming superior or creation would fail.
Should one faction, be it good, evil, order or chaos become too powerful,
then Ostran will seek to undermine the expanding power or build up the
decreasing one in order to maintain balance. Though it is rare for Ostran
to act in such a manner, preferring instead to sit back and let worldly
matters pass by while he pursues idyllic contemplation. Like Kreaon, Ostran
set up certain natural cycles that maintain the balance. These cycles play
off the separate forces that make up creation and see that they are self
regulating. Only in the rarest moments when the specific work of one god
upsets this cycle does Ostran have to step in and act personally.
Ostran sees and balances all things,
after setting the regulating and balancing cycle into play, he is
rarely seen to be the instigator of anything new. The natural cycle is
balance; life springs forth and is balanced by death, chaos abounds to
be once more put in order by law, Love opposes hate, darkness counters
light, etc... Ostran is never seen to start nor finish anything, his acts
are always a circle with no beginning and no end, a pendulum that is balanced
and swings form one end to the other without rest. The most Ostran need
do is give a gentle push at times to maintain proper momentum when one
side swings lower than the other. Ostran tends to view things in totality,
never narrowing his view to that of a single individual or even nation.
Boundaries and borders placed by man and humanoid alike mean nothing to
Ostran. All things are part of the natural cycle, and this cycle is the
most beautiful of creations; it is the duty of the devout to seek there
place in the cycle and keep the balance within creation that includes then,
and thus, find and maintain the balance within themselves.
Balance comes from things relating,
if things do not relate, there can be no opposition and so no force to
create balance. For example, good and evil are opposites. But they relate
to each other, they are connected in that they are philosophies of action
and ethics. One cannot know evil if they have never witnessed good. One
defines the other. That link is where Ostran comes in, he is the relationship
between the two, the god that provides the definitions. Through his wisdom
these relationships are known and measured. Life and Death are opposites,
but they both relate to each other through the natural cycle where Ostran
resides.
The natural cycle declares that wo
things oppose each other to make a single object. This is the Ostrian view
of the world. Nothing can exist without its counter, only through a balance
of opposites can anything be defined and without definition nothing can
exist. For example; a bow, without the force of the string on the two ends
is useless, but then without the force of the wood trying to regain it's
shape it is also useless. Out of this opposition comes neutrality, which
is useful, two forces contesting against each other to create a positive
outcome. These relationships are most important to Ostran. Not those of
a person relating with another person, but of the greater balance and oppositions
that form the cosmos itself. However, to a lesser degree, Ostran
cares about creation and living society as a whole, still not the individual
in society, but civilization and it's opposition to the wilderness. The
rise and fall of empires mirrors that of the natural cycle of spring, summer,
fall and winter. Ostran allows his worshippers to be involved in politics
of the world because there is a need for balance there as well as in nature.
Watchfulness - The devout of Ostran are charged to be the eyes of balance, keeping watch over all things. This often means at times a worshipper of Ostran will be forced into the confines of unbalanced areas, such as most cities. Followers are taught how to see the balance or lack there of in all things, so that they might know their place in the workings of the cycle. They are made to keep the balance by taking one view one day, and the opposing the next. Thus, they might see the whole picture, and attempt to view the macrocosm of creation as a whole.
Patience - The faithful of Ostran are charged to be patient with their actions, as they must be in all things. The shifting of balance is not a rapid thing, and may often take subtle maneuvering to accomplish. The followers of Ostran are taught to take the long-term view, so that they might realize the layered effects of every action or combination of actions. By careful planning and patience, the clergy of Ostran can maintain the balance and avoid any accidental factors to shift things beyond control or too far towards other forces.
Experience - One must experience the world in order to begin to understand it. The worshippers of Ostran are to use their every sense to gain as much experience of the different natures of the world as they are able. But in their experience they are not to upset the balance nor be a cause for change or stagnation. It is their duty to walk the world and learn of it without leaving their own fingerprint upon it.
Contemplation - Before a faithful of Ostran can view the balance in life, he must first find that balance within himself. Ostrians often find their inner balance through meditative prayer in the peace and serenity of the untamed wilderness. Body, soul and mind must seek perfect harmony in order for the balance to be maintained.
Teach - The devout of Ostran are sent out to teach the importance of the balance, the natural cycle of creation and the cycles found in all things. They are charged to relay that all things must contain opposition to exist, for what is black without white, good without evil, and law without chaos. They are to explain the subtle and beautiful patterns found in creation and define it that are the cycle of balance.
Teachings of Ostran
Ostran is rarely seen as either male or female but appears to be androgynous, neither one or the other ,or either one or the other as is needed. Typically dressed in clothing woven of natural fibers or hides, Ostran is always clean shaven or appears as feminine or as a youth. Body shape is lean, muscular, attractive and healthy but not overly so. The face is generally hard to describe as most people only notice the eyes which blaze forth from his face, searing into the soul of those he is looking at and seeing the very nature of who ever he may view.
Alters and Idols:
Ostran has no alter and asks for no sacrifice, nor does the Keeper of the Scales wish any idol to itself. Instead what suffices for a place of prayer and worship is any natural formation of rocks or a great tree, hidden away from the workings of civilization and the work of society. Many such places of worship are natural formations in patterns or designs that were created without the touch of any living being. Intricate circles of standing stones, or mazes of thorn bushes and rock faces elaboratly fashioned through many years of wrok by Ostran's worshippers sometimes mark such places.
Major Centers of Worship:
The Contemplators
of Balance are small compared to the amount of power this god wields. In
all of Kyranath there are only seven temples devoted to Ostran, one on
each continent. Of these temples, each has been placed in an obscure but
also somehow importantly balanced area, surrounded by untouched wilderness.
The Temple of
Ostran located on the continent of Thardferr is in a hidden valley within
the eastern most part of the Durlock Mountains at the point where the three
realms of Alderd, Edilar and Khardfee meet.
It has been
said that the temples of Ostran are among the most beautifully crafted
works ever seen on Kyranath, being a perfect balance of the elements, as
well as its seeming mix of order and chaos. However, this beauty is only
in appearance, as within, all things mingle into a gray existence. The
Eyes of Ostran are carved into the very structure at every turn to symbolize
his ever watching presence, and entering a temple has been compared to
having Ostran stare into your soul. Apart from the seven temples the only
places of worship to be found are natural shrines and druidic circles located
in the deep wilderness areas of Kyranath.
Worshipers:
Ostran is most popular with those whose livelihood requires them to view both sides of any situation. Those in seats of power have often paid homage to the Watcher, hoping that his wisdom might aid them in their rule. Advisers have long sought the patience and foresight of the Balancer, as have sages and philosophers, when pouring over texts that have many interpretations. That is not to say that these are the only people who seek the comfort of The Center; fore many is the man who seeks the balance of self when dealing with the issues and stress of living. Ostran is often looked to during arguments as the intervening force to find a neutral comprimise, during times of mental illness as a means to balance the mind, and during times of emotional distress as a means to balance the heart.
The Clergy:
The
Contemplators of Balance can be found almost anywhere, but are slow to
openly address many people. They tend to be found in the background of
scenes, watching and listening. Ostran has a surprisingly small clergy
for the amount of worship he receives, but his clergy are strong in their
belief and unwavering in their determination. While not the most popular
of allies in a conflict, they are sought out on matters of mediation.
The Contemplators of Balance do not believe that the ends justify the means.
In the mind of Ostran, ideas are much more potent a weapon then the sword.
A sword raised in anger, or even one raised in the purpose of justice,
will always do more harm then good. Ostrians will advise and manipulate
but rarely if ever intervene. The charge and duty is to watch and observe,
not act and force change. When they do intervene it is not as allies but
mediators and diplomats. Th Contemplators of Balance are truly neutral
and try to maintain this neutrality above all else.
Church Hierarchy:
"One of equals, learned in the ways of balance, a part of the great cycle, I go forth to be part of the force that keeps at bay those great entities that would topple creation..." – From the 'Oath of the Balancer'
The Eyes of Ostran- The Contemplators of Balance, in accordance with his teachings, maintains no hierarchy. Such is the belief in balance and equality, that the church maintains that all are equal in the eyes of Ostran. There are those, of course, who have been in service to the Ever-watcher longer, but it is believed that the wants and teachings of Ostran are clear enough so that no orders need be given. The clergy travel the lands, teaching, watching, and maintaining the balance through subtle urging, and manipulation. At the end of each year, the Eyes return to the nearest temple to Ostran to report and scribe the events they have seen. After this task, which often takes a month or more, they return to their duties.
The Druid - Dedicated to balance in nature, wilderness and the world, these Contemplators of Balance live in the wilds and shun civilization. Though they are not the enemy of society they fill the need for balance in keeping the world in touch with its primal nature. Druids of Ostran are a part of many separate orders though all are more concerned with how wilderness and nature fit into the greater creation than as avengers of nature or the conservation and growth of the wilds.
The Balancer - Even in the church of Ostran where it is taught that the worshipper should embrace his place in the world and not be a proponent of change or a keeper of order, but maintain balance, there is a need of agents to do more. These Balancers go out and promote either the need of good or evil, law or chaos in order to bring the forces that govern the world back to equilibrium. These specially charged individuals in the Contemplators of Balance are great in wisdom and much watch themselves or fall prey to the forces they attempt to contain. Though they should not make a mark on the world themselves, it is their duty to help others to bring changes or provide order to maintain balance.
Ceremonies and Holy Days:
Time of Shifting (Each day at
midday)
This is the only continually practiced
ceremony within the Contemplators of Balance, as it signifies the shifting
of views, to accommodate the balance and be a part of individual cycles.
Each day, at midday, the follower of Ostran must take time to pray to Ostran
for the ability to see and understand the opposing view of whatever matter
they are dealing with during the morning portion of the day. At the end
of this prayer, the cleric then takes a completely opposite viewpoint and
acts on it for the remainder of the day.
Avatar Birth (1st of Provos)
This Holy Day celebrates the birth
of the many gods from the three, and thereby the birth of balance. It is
the celebration of the coming of Ostran and his influence in the decisions
made by the greater force known as Ost. It generally consists of a multitude
of Contemplators of Balance who meet to dance, play music, and give prayer.
While not as active as other clergy in their festivities, the chanted prayers
of Ostran's clergy have been referred to as the soothing voice of Ostran
himself.
Day of Grace (Last Day of the
Year)
This is the day before the New
Year, when the Contemplators of Balance come together to celebrate the
end of one cycle and the beginning of another, but ultimately, the continuation
of the balance. This celebration is comprised of various foods from all
parts in the region and the ritual chanting that mystifies many people
throughout Kyranath.
Priestly Vestments:
The Contemplators of Balance dress in rather drab earth tones; gray, brown, olive green, etc., colors that easily blend into wilderness surroundings. Their dress is simple and functional and suited for travel. The symbol of Ostran can be found carved into the top of a walking stick or staff of many members of his church as well as on a medallion worn about the neck. They wear sturdy walking boots and feel little need for armor, for if they don't go out of their way to find trouble then trouble wont go out of its way to find them, but at need were natural hides and leather. Normally they will go nowhere without a protective cloak and preparations for at least a week's travel through the wilderness.
Affiliated Orders, Societies and Guilds:
The Scales of Ostran- This mysterious druidic order is mainly concerned with the balancing of the forces of good and evil. The druids are able to lean so far to one degree or the other as to be neutral good or neutral evil. But regardless of their opposing alignments they work together to see that the forces of good and evil are always in balance.
The Monks of Contemplation-
This is an order of monks that reside in their monastery located between
the Trapping Forest of Lithar and the Icy Mountains of Tuth. The monks
are a peaceful lot and rarely if ever venture outside the sanctuary of
their protected grounds. Within they mainly care for wild animals that
have contracted diseases or been in some way injured. They are known to
train these normally wild animals to obey and aid them after they are made
healthy.
Church Errata:
Allies
The Daughters of the Cycle: Tyre, Diadria, Celenia and Loralis ***- These four goddesses are all said to be the Daughters of Ostran and are all the main goddesses dealing with the cycle of life. They all maintain a part of the great cycle from birth and the placement of the spirit through life and health, into dreams and the sleeping living and finally into death and the preparation for eternity. all are allied with Ostran and he maintains the cycle and so aids them all in their part of it.
The Elemental Children: Aerie, Terrarie, Fyrre and Aqualie ***- The elements that were used to create and define the world are all needed and must be balanced in order to keep all form becoming either ordered in to stagnation or randomly displaced in to destruction. The children of Tyre, the grandchildren of Ostran maintain their side of the four part balance and are all allied with Ostran.
Foes
Kreaon ***- As the major player in worldly order and conservatism, the Creator would not see balance maintained but only the creations of his world allowed to control everything. This would bring stagnation and a loss of more creativeness through the workings of other gods and the people of the world itself. Balance is only maintained through equal parts of everything and so no one side can become dominant.
Ballog ***- Nihilism and destruction would rule out any need for balance. With all being destroyed or in the pursuit of destruction and change, the cosmos would fall apart. Though destruction and change are needed, so is order and stability. A balance must be maintained in order to allow for the perfect state in which to live and experience.

Appendix 3: Outer Realm of Ostran
Vallenwood, the Eternal Forest
Within
the Abyss are enclaves of creation that are the realms of some of the gods.
Most of these are small in comparison to the near infinite plain that is
the realm of the dead which borders most of the Outer Realms or walled
cities within the Abyss. But throughout the Abyss are found small woods,
dense growths of lush greenery like islands of life in the desert of corruption
and decay. Most of the dead shun these wood as they search for their own
place in the afterlife but some that have found balance while alive continue
to need balance and so cannot stay on the Road to Justification that all
dead must follow. When their road comes close to one of these wooded areas,
the forest calls to them, it is the balance they need in this place and
so lets them in to its seeming place of life her after death. This is Vallenwood,
the place of balance where nature and what seems living has a place in
the realms of the dead. Though scattered like grains of rice across a great
halls floor, each of these woods are connected. Once you have entered you
can visit any of them without having to again enter the Abyss. Each wood
is given over to those that were able to find their balance through contemplation
in life and had worshipped Ostran. These act as a resting place for their
souls where they can continue their contemplation in a setting of peace
and serenity.
Also these woods
hold the souls of those that had found perfect balance in life and have
been brought here while their body still lives and is used by others who
still have a need for one. Through reincarnate spells, they are given the
ability to leave life and go to Vallenwood without having to suffer death,
their body then given to another soul that wishes to remain in the world
after theirs has been lost. These migratory souls may once again walk the
living world if they chose and another is balanced enough to trade places
with them across the boundary of life and death. The divine spell of reincarnation
is needed to allow this and a means of the soul to send a message that
they wish to return must also be found. For this reason some of these souls
will leave their little piece of Vallenwood and travel the Abyss seeking
newly arriving souls. They will aid them in finding their final destination
and hope to find one that is being contacted form the other side. If one
of the newly arrived souls does have someone speak to them, the migratory
balanced soul can send their message along to the living world and hope
for the best. It is also possible that the migratory soul can gain an audience
with Ostran and be sent back into a newly created life if Tyre allows it.
Appendix 4: Book of God's Name
Okarn, Contemplation's of the Forest
The Book of Okarn is filled with parables and sayings that have been handed down and continually added to the pages through the ages. They are recorded from the reports of the Clergy who have returned to give their insights to the church. After death of the clergyman, if they are considered to be wise and to have found their balance through contemplation of themselves and the world, their words of wisdom are reviewed and some are immortalized as being true insights of Ostran passed through the individual and so written into the book. reading the book gains new insight in some while confirming insights of others. Many will read it and take away different ideas and thoughts, while some gain nothing at all. The whole is not to be taken as coherent and complete, only parts are applicable at any time and so the worshippers of Ostran are known to read the book many times at different places in their life so as to gain the most they can form it and allow the insights of those that had come before to aid them in finding new ones for themselves and to share with others.
